About Us

About the Middle English Translator.

We build free, fast, and private language tools that make the history of English accessible to everyone — from students and teachers to writers, role-players, and curious readers.

Our mission

Middle English — the language of Chaucer, Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, and Piers Plowman — sits close enough to modern English to feel familiar, yet far enough away to be genuinely puzzling. We wanted a tool that removes that barrier. Our goal is simple: let anyone translate between modern English and Middle English instantly, with authentic spelling, dialects, and historical accuracy, and with no sign-up, paywall, or download.

How the translator works

  • Bidirectional engine. Translate modern English to Middle English, or paste Middle English and get a modern gloss.
  • Authentic spelling. Optional thorn (þ), eth (ð), and yogh (ȝ), with a modernized → balanced → authentic slider.
  • Regional dialects. London, Northern, West Midland, and Kentish forms — kirke vs chirche, sal vs shal.
  • Private by design. Translation runs entirely in your browser. The text you enter is never sent to our servers.
